Employment
Government, Wholesale and Retail Trade, Services, and Manufacturing (food and kindred products,
primary metal products, electrical machinery, transportation equipment, chemicals and allied products, ma-
chinery, printing and publishing) are the leading areas of employment in the State of Maryland. In contrast to
the nation as a whole, more people in Maryland are employed in Wholesale and Retail Trade, Government,
and Services than in Manufacturing as shown in the following table depicting the percentage Distribution of
