O'ER THE RAMPARTS

Fort McHenry at the mouth of Baltimore's inner
harbor is the site of the birth of "The Star-
Spangled Banner." Francis Scott Key on the ship
Minden, watched the battle on September 13,
1814. Rockets were used during the 'bombard-
ment of the fort and on the next morning Key
observed that the flag was still there. The battle
was spectacular but did little damage. The guns
now to be seen at the fort were not used then;
they are Civil War weapons. There are, inciden-
tally, only two places in Maryland where the
American flag flies both day and night—Fort Mc-
Henry, and Key's grave in Frederick.
