XIV REPORT OF THE
The total net earnings of the Tobacco Warehouses last
year, exclusive of salaries paid to the Inspectors, were $10,-
585.12. The Inspectors' salaries are $9,000.00. This is an
improvement over the year before, in which the salaries of
the Inspectors exceeded the net earnings. As far as the-
State's revenue is concerned, it makes but little difference
what becomes of the State inspection of tobacco. It af-
fords cheap warehousage to the tobacco-grower. The to-
bacco warehouses and wharves ar'e properties of considerable-
value, built it is claimed by revenues derived by the State
from the tobacco-growers. If the State inspection system is
continued, the Inspectors should look to the revenues for
their salaries, as well as the other expenses. If the system
is abolished, legislation will be needed in regard to the
tobacco properties.
The net earnings to the Treasury from the the Livestock
Scales were $4,893.73, and $8.542.44 less than the previous

as the year previous.

ing Department are always equal, and never enough to pay
the salaries of the Weighers.

foreign Insurance Companies were $52,868.30, being an in-
crease over the previous year of $5,051.19.
