other old liabilities of the Company included
in the above expenditures the following sums:
To the State of Virginia for interest............... $58,435 00

Certificates of repairs and for officers salaries

prior to 1845, and interest........................ 3,988 80

The above amount of expenses also includes the

For construction of Dam No. 5, and abutment, $34,924 64
Basin at Cumberland................................. 13,300 00

Little basin at ditto....................................' 2,925 20

Dam at Rock Creek, D. C........................... 1,350 00

Compromise with Dodge.............................. 6,000 00

Partial rebuilding of Lock 48........................ 3,500 00

Rebuilding part Catoctin aqueduct............... 1,200 00

*Break at Shepherdstown....................... 5,000 00

Rebuilding bridge at Falling Waters........... 1,280 00

Purchasing house at Little Falls and repairs ... 700 00

Total..................„..., ..................... 70,429 84

The business of the Canal for the present sea-

son as compared with the last, shows the fol-

lowing result:

Receipts from tolls from 1st January to 1st

June, 1870...................................... $102,920 54

Receipts from tolls from 1st January to 1st
June, 1869........................................ 89,169 09

Increase............................. $113,751 43

The receipts for May this year, were.... $57,231 77
This is the largest sum that has been received by the
Company in any one month

*This sum is properly chargeable to the Potomac Cement Company''
