TREASURY DEPARTMENT,
COMPTROLLER'S OFFICE,
ANNAPOLIS, January 10, 1863.
To the Governor of Maryland:
IN compliance with Section 9 of Article XXII of the
Code of Public General Laws, I submit to your Excellency,
the following Report:
The receipts into the Treasury for the fiscal year which
commenced October 1st, 1861, and ended September 30th,
1862, as will be seen by reference to the Appendix, under
the head of Statement A, which gives a detailed account
thereof, amounted to the sum of $1,823,563.87, which in-
cludes the sum of $173,587.75 obtained from the sales in
June last, of a part of the Stock of the "Maryland Defence
Loan," (authorized by Chapter 143, of 1862,) and the pre-
miums obtained thereon. The whole amount, so received,
exceeds the receipts of the next preceding fiscal year,
by the sum of $862,750.79; and exceeds the receipts
of other preceding years, exclusive of receipts from sales
of stocks, or from other extraordinary sources from
$400,000.00 to $650,000.00. The sum received during the
fiscal year, ended September 30th, 1862, when added to the
apparent balance in the Treasury, September 30th, 1861, of
$170,044.42, makes the whole sum available to the Treasury
for the last fiscal year amount to $1,993,608.29.
It will be observed, by reference to the Tables, that the
receipts have increased from almost all sources of Revenue,
and from some of them quite heavily. Of this increase,
only about $200,000 was derived from the additional direct
tax of fifteen cents on each $100 of assessable property im-
posed by the Legislature at its last Session, inasmuch as at
the close of the fiscal year, a large part of the tax of 1862
