TREASURY DEPARTMENT, COMPTROLLER'S OFFICE, January 4th, 1858. To the Legislature, of Maryland: THE following Report is respectfully submitted in accord- RECEIPTS. STATEMENT A, of the Appendix, shows the total receipts There remained in the Treasury on the 30th September, Of the receipts in 1857,:the sum of $958,746.44 was for By a comparison of the total receipts in 1856 with those in of $121,436.83. This may be accounted for, to some extent, by the repeal of the Stamp Duties, on account of which $40,123.23 were received 'into the Treasury in 1856 ; and, it must also be borne in mind that the revenue for direct taxes in arrears is gradually diminishing.
