Passed Jan. 29, 1836

An act to incorporate the Columbia Beneficial Society of

 

Maryland.

Preamble

WHEREAS, Ezekiel C. Johnson, Charles Hogg,

 

James Lownds, James Coburn, William Jones, John

 

Dowell, Stephen G. Donahoe, and others, have formed

 

themselves into a society for the laudable purpose of

 

affording relief to each other and their respective fami-

 

lies, in the event of sickness and death, and have pray-

 

ed an act of incorporation, that they may the better

 

execute their intentions, and .the Legislature being

 

desirous of promoting, such useful institutions: —

 

Therefore,

Persons incorpora-ted

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly

 

of Maryland, That Ezekiel C. Johnson, Charles Hogg,

 

James Lownds, James Coburn, William Jones, John

 

Dowell, Stephen G. Donahoe, and others, that now are

 

or may hereafter become members of said corporation

 

herein erected, or may be admitted into said corpora-

 

tion agreeably to the constitution, rules and by-laws of

 

the same, and their successors, are hereby declared to

 

be one community, corporation and body politic, by

the name, style and title of the Columbia Beneficial

 

Society of Maryland; Provided nevertheless, that the

Provisions for dis-solving

said corporation may be dissolved at any time by the

 

consent of its members, as is hereinafter provided.

Officers to man-

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the affairs of said

age

society shall be managed and conducted by a President,

 

Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, five Stewards,

 

and a Messenger, to be elected annually on the third

 

Monday in March, or as soon thereafter as may be

 

convenient, in each and every year, in such manner as

 

said society shall think proper to appoint.

General powers conferred

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That the present mem-

 

bers of said society, and their successors, or a majority

 

of them, by their corporate name, shall and may have

 

succession, and may be at all times hereafter persons

 

able and capable in law, to purchase, take, have and

 

enjoy, to them and their successors, in fee or less es-

 

tate or estates, any lands, tenements, rents, annuities.
