perae them by reasaonable and lawful means, and to punish
with moderate correction all such negroes and other slaves
as shall be found wandering, or strolling about the streets in
the night time, or frequenticg the houses of other persons in
said village, without the permission of their masters, mis-

tresses, or overseers; and the said commissioners, shall al-
low and pay to their said clerk for his services, and also to
the bailiff of the said village for bis extra services as collec-
tor, respectively, a reasonable compensation, to be rated by
the said commissioners, and paid out of the monies arising
by virtue of this act.

Sec. 14 And be it enacted, That the said commissioners
shall on the said first Monday of April next, or as soon
thereafter as may be convenient, and annually every year
thereafter, appoint a discreet, sensible person, to be treasur-
er of the corporation of said village, who, before he acts

as such shall give bond to the state of Maryland, with
good and sufficient security in the penalty of one thousand
dollars, to be approved by the levy court of the county, con-
ditioned, that the said treasurer shall well and faithfully ac-
count for all monies paid over to him by the said bailiff and
constable, and shall also well and truly pay over to the com-
missioners aforesaid, or their order, all sums of money so
received by him from the bailiff as aforesaid, and it shall
be the duty of the levy court to have the same entered on

record by their clerk, at the expense of the corporation,
and a copy thereof under the seal of the county court, shall
be good evidence to prove the execution of such bond in

any court of this state, and it shall be the duty of the said
treasurer to keep, fair, just and true accounts of the re-
ceipt and disbursements of the funds of the corporation of
the village of Denton, in a well bound book, to be provided
for that purpose by the said commissioners, and to render
annually, to the said commissioners, an account exhibiting
the state of the funds of the corporation.

ect fines, taxes &c.

Sec. 15. And be it enacted, That if any person or per-
sons, shall refuse or neglect to pay the taxes, fines and for-
feitures respectively charged against them by virtue of this
act, it shall and may be lawful for the commissioners of the
said village to collect the same in the same manner, by their
bailiff and constable, that the county taxes are collected by
the collector, and in case there may be found real or per-
sonal property, within the village of Denton, and the owner
or owners thereof, being resident of some other county,
then and in that case, the commissioners shall have full pow-
er and authority to sell so much of said property as will
satisfy the sum or sums so due and owing, by the owner of
