CHAPTER 111.

Passed Feb. 13, 1832

An act to incorporate Mechanics Town, in Frederick County.

Incorporated.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Ma-
ryland, Tha the citizens of Mechanics Town, in Frederick
county, shall be and they are hereby constituted and made a
body corporate, by the name of the burgess and commis-
sioners of Mechanics Town, with all the privileges of a bo-
dy corporate, and to have a common seal and perpetual suc-
cession.

Qualification of
voters.

Sec. 2. And be enacted, That the free white male citizens
of Mechanics town aforesaid, of the age of twenty-one years
and upwards, and having resided in the said town for and
during the space of twelve months next preceeding the
election, and being free holders within the corporate limits
of said town, or being tenants of some freehold within the
limits of said corporation during the space of one year pre-
ceeding the election, shall, on the first Monday of April
next, at the house now occupied as a tavern by Henry Fun
denburg, and on the first Monday of April in each and eve-
ry year hereafter, at such place as shall be designated by

the burgess and commissioners, be authorised to elect a bur-
gess and three commissioners for the said town, who shall
have resided within the limits of said town twelve months,

Qualification of
office.

next preceding the election, and who shall each be the pro-
prietor of a house and lot of ground, within the limits of
said town, and be upwards of twenty-one years of age.

Judges.

Sec. 3. And be it enacted, That a justice of the peace of
said county, shall appoint by writing under his hand and
seal, one judge to hold the first election, who shall keep the
polls open from nine o'clock in the morning until two in the
evening, and shall conduct the said election in the manner in
which the judges of election are now by law directed, to
conduct an election for delegates to the general assembly,
as far as may be consistent with the provisions of this act,

Returns.

and the said judges shall make return under his hand and
seal of the persons elected, to the clerk of Frederick coun-
ty, to be by him safely kept.

Future elections.

Sec. 4. And be it enacted, That all future elections shall
be held and conducted as shall from time to time- be direct-
ed by the ordinances of the corporation, the same not being
inconsistent with the provisions of this act

Burgess.

Sec. 5. And be it enacted, That the burgess at all meet-
ings of the municipality, shall preside, and 'shall sign all or-
dinances passed by the commissioners, or a majority of them.

Meetings,

Sec. 6. And be it enacted, That the burgess and commis-
sioners aloresaid may meet together from time to time, as
