The Senate of Maryland:

In compliance with an order of the Senate, I respectfully
submit the following statement:

One article of the alleged indebtedness of St. John's Col-
lege, is on account of Professors' salaries, charged as in part
unpaid fer some time past. As I understand it, the claim
arises in this way. At a meeting of the Board of Visitors
and Governors of St. John's College, held July 6th, 1871
the salaries of the Faculty were reduced by a resolution of
the Board. That of the Principal was reduced five hundred
dollars, and those of the subordinate Professors were also re-
duced by a less amount. The difference between the salaries
paid since this resolution was passed reducing them, and the
