of free public schools for the State of Maryland, and to repeal
all laws inconsistent therewith, and to re-enact the same with
amendments, and to substitute other sections in lieu of those
repealed to read as follows.

Mr. Billingsley, from a Select Committee, reported

The House bill entitled an Act to authorize the Sheriffs of the
several counties and city of Baltimore, to collect certain fees
due the late Clerk of the Circuit Court for St. Mary's county,

With the following amendment:

AMENDMENT PROPOSED.

"And provided that this Act shall not be so construed
as to deprive any of the parties against whom such fees shall
be demanded from any defences to which they are now enti-
tled by law."

Which was adopted.

The bill, as amended, was read the second time.

Mr. Williams, from the Committee on Corporations, re-
ported unfavorably on

The House bill entitled an Act to incorporate the Oakland
Cemetery Company,

And the report was adopted.

ported favorably on

The House bill entitled an Act supplementary to an Act
passed at January Session, 1870, chapter 168, entitled an
additional supplement to an Act to incorporate the Roman
Catholic Congregation of Baltimore Town, passed November
Session, 1795, chapter 15, to enable the said corporation to
purchase a new burial-ground.

Which was read the second time.

Also, reported favorably on

The House bill entitled an Act to amend an Act to incor-
porate the Bachman Valley Rail Road Company, passed at
January Session, 1870, authorizing and empowering the
President and Directors of said Company, or a majority of
them, to issue the bonds of the said Company, to an amount
not exceeding $50,000.
