CHAPTER 407.
|
 
|
AN ACT to appropriate a sum of money to com-
|
 
|
plete and ornament the cemetery provided for the
|
 
|
interment of the remains of the Confederate dead
|
 
|
at Point Lookout.
|
 
|
WHEREAS, at the session of eighteen hundred and
|
 
|
seventy, an act, chapter eighty-five, section one, was
|
 
|
passed to appropriate three thousand dollars to pur-
|

chase a lot of ground, not exceeding two acres, situ-
|
 
|
ated on or near the site of the late camp for Confeder-
|
 
|
ate prisoners at Point Lookout, in St. Mary's county,
|
 
|
in which to inter the remains of Confederate soldiers
|
 
|
who died at said point while prisoners of war, and
|
 
|
for enclosing and ornamenting the same ; and —
|
 
|
WHEREAS, certain commissioners were appointed
|

to carry out the same ; and —
|
 
|
WHEREAS, by a communication made.to this Gen-
|
 
|
eral Assembly of Maryland by the President of the
|
 
|
Board of Commissioners, it appears that the sum so.
|
 
|
appropriated has been expended in exhuming and
|

interring the Confederate dead, numbering three
|
 
|
thousand, four hundred and four, and in placing an
|
 
|
iron enclosure around the grounds, leaving only of
|
 
|
said appropriation undrawn from the treasury, the
|
 
|
small balance of four hundred and seventy-two dol-
|
 
|
lars; and —
|
 
|
WHEREAS, said balance is entirely inadequate to
|

complete the work and carry out the purpose of the
|
 
|
commissioners ; therefore —
|
 
|
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
|
 
|
Maryland, That the sum of one thousand dollars be
|
Appropriation.
|
and the same is hereby appropriated to further im-
prove and complete Point Lookout Cemetery, by the
|
 
|
commissioners aforesaid, as a place set aside for the
|
 
|
interment of the Confederate dead.
|
 
|
SEC. 2. Be it enacted, That the Treasurer, upon the
|
 
|
warrant of the Comptroller, be and he is hereby di-
