114 JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS [Jan. 23,

tions as are contemplated, and may be provided by the
present General Assembly, is in accordance with the judg-
ment and wishes of, and seems to be entirely satisfactory to,
the people of both races.

Therefore, be it Resolved by the General Assembly of Mary-
land, That the passage of the Act now before the Congress
of the United States, entitled the Supplemental Civil Eights
Bill, which, amongst other things, require the sustenance of

mixed schools in this State, will, in our opinion, be impolitic,

unwise, and to use the words of the petitioners to the
General Assembly of 1872, "detrimental to the educational
interest of both the white and colored races."

And be it further Resolved, That our Senatois in the Con-
gress of the United States be instructed, and our Representa-
tives respectfully requested, to present this preamble and
resolution to their respective Houses, and to use their best

endeavors to prevent the passage of the said Supplemental
Civil Rights Bill, or any bill having similar provisions, and

especially that provision requiring a maintainance of mixed
schools in this State.

Which were read a first time, and,

On motion of Mr, Stake,
Referred to the Committee on Federal Relations.

Mr. Henkle, Chairman (on the part of the House) of the

Joint Committee on Printing, submitted the following

REPORT.

The House Committee on Printing respectfully report that

they have contracted with Henry Aisquith, Esqr., for the in-
dexing and arranging of the House Journal and Documents
of the present session, for the sum of five hundred dollars,

the work to be completed within twenty days from the ad-
journment of the Legislature.

E. J. HENKLE,
Chairman on the part of the House of the

Joint Committee on Printing.
Which was read.

The question recurring upon the adoption of the Report,
Mr. Seth submitted the following amendment:

Strike out the word "five," before the word "hundred,"
