96. 1848. On motion of Mr. Causin, Mr. Andrew Slicer was appointed Messenger; & Mr. William Glover Door Keeper. On motion of Mr. Causin, the Electors proceeded to ballot for President of the United States. Mr. Cottman nominated Zachary Taylor, of Louisiana: Whereupon the ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box, which was sealed & delivered by the President to Messrs. Cottman & Harris, who, on counting the said ballots in the presence of the Electors, reported there had been Eight ballots cast, all of which were for Zachary Taylor. Whereupon, it was declared by the Secretary that Zachary Taylor, of Louisiana, had received Eight votes for President of the United States, from & after the Third Day of March next ensuing, being the whole number to which the State of Maryland is entitled. On motion of Egan, the Electors proceeded to ballot for Vice President of the United States. Mr. Harris nominated Millard Fillmore, of New York: Whereupon the ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box, which was sealed & delivered by the President to Messrs. Harris & Cottman, who, on counting the ballots, in the presence of the Electors, reported there had been eight ballots cast, all of which were for Millard Fillmore. Whereupon, it was declared by the Secretary that Millard Fillmore, of New York had received Eight votes for Vice President of the United States, from & after the Third Day of March next ensuing, being the whole number to which the State of Maryland is entitled. The President laid before the Electors a sealed communication from His Excellency Philip Francis Thomas, Governor of Maryland, covering Three Certificates of the election of the Electors, which communication was read & ordered to be on the table. On motion of Mr. Causin, the Secretary was directed to prepare the usual Forms of Certificates for the signatures of the Electors. Whereupon, the Secretary prepared three several certificates, agreeably to the following Form: To the Honorable, the President of the Senate of the United States of America.
