197 States for President of the United States and in counting the ballots it was ascertained that William McKinley of the State of Ohio had received eight votes for President of the United States, and that no other person was voted for. We further certify that Garret A. Hobart of the State of New Jersey was then and there put in nomination for Vice President of the United States for the four years from and after the third day of March next ensuing. That we then and there, in pursuance of the Constitution and Laws of the United States proceeded to vote by ballot for Vice President of the United States and that on counting the ballots it was ascertained, that Garret A. Hobart of the State of New Jersey had received eight votes for Vice President of the United States of America, and no other person was voted for. We further certify that there were distinct ballots for President and Vice President. The annexed distinct lists of the said persons with the votes given to the same, are hereby returned by us, the Electors of President and Vice President of the United States in and for the State of Maryland in pursuance of the Constitution and Laws of the United States, as having the aforesaid number of votes. Done at the City of Annapolis on this second Monday of January, being the Eleventh day of said Month, in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-seven.
