1856 States, in and for the State of Maryland, not having appeared in the Senate Chamber. On motion of Mr. Roman, the following order was read and adopted. Ordered. The we now proceed to fill the vacancy existing in this College agreeably to the Act of Assembly of December Session 1833 chapter 261. On motion of Mr. Roman William Thoursan was appointed to fill the vacancy in this body occasioned by the absence of Augustus R. Sollers as aforesaid. William Thoursan Esq. appeared in the Senate Chamber qualified by taking the oaths prescribed by the Constitution and the Laws, and by declaring his belief in the Christian Religion, and took his seat. On motion of Mr. Swann the Electors then proceeded to ballot for President and Vice President of the United States in conformity with the requirements of the Constitution and Laws. Mr. Swann nominated Millard Fillmore of the State of New York for President of the United States. The ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box which was sealed and delivered by the President to Messrs. Swann and Wallace who on counting the ballots in the presence of the Electors reported there had been eight ballots cast all of which were for Millard Fillmore. Whereupon it was declared that Millard Fillmore of the State of New York had received eight votes for President of the United States of America from and after the third day of March next ensuing, being the whole number to which the State of Maryland is entitled. On motion of Mr. Roman the Electors proceeded to ballot for Vice President of the United States. Mr. Roman nominated Andrew Jackson Donelsan of the State of Tennessee. The ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box which was sealed and delivered by the President to Messrs. Swann and Wallace who are counting the ballots in the presence of the Electors reported there had been eight ballots cast all of |
