Contents of the Old Book afforded the reader many ideas for research. The decision was to concentrate on references involving the State in the presidential elections from 1789 through 1980. To accomplish this, the following information was organized: names of electors of victorious candidates and party affiliation, names of leading contenders for president and vice-president, party affiliation, names of Maryland's governors and party affiliation, names of secretaries of state, popular and electoral vote in Maryland, popular and electoral vote, nationally. Miscellania is just that - interesting items, some set in Maryland, others referring to national elections and to our presidents. Acknowledgment and thanks for their gracious assistance are due Diana Frese and Phebe Jacobsen of the Maryland Hall of Records, Gilbert Gude, Director, Congressional Research Service, Library of Congress, David Kepley of the National Archives and Shirley Rittenhouse of the Maryland Law Library. Also to be noted are Willard A. Morris, Adminis- trator of the State Administrative Board of Election Laws, whose ideas and inspiration were responsible for the publication becoming a reality and the efforts of Ann Smith, staff mem- ber, who compiled and coordinated the data. Ernestine B. Green, Staff Secretary, was most helpful with typing and proofreading. - viii - |
