Jefferson's nomination was the first time the
roll call was publicly reported. This election
was the first after adoption of the 12th
Amendment to the Constitution altering the
electoral college procedure, requiring elec-
tors to cast separate votes for President and
for Vice President.
The second term election was an overwhelm-
ing victory for Jefferson. The Aaron Burr
treason scandal rocked the nation during this
time and Jefferson, who ordered his arrest
for the crime of treason, considered it a per-
sonal insult when Chief Justice J. Marshall, a
Federalist, acquitted Burr.
