Republicans disputed returns from South
Carolina, Florida, Louisiana and Oregon
and in a most daring misuse of power,
mustered enough electoral votes to give
Hayes a victory only 56 hours before the
inauguration.

an assassin, served 200 days and for 80 of
those he lay near death with a bullet through
his spine.
Arthur surprised the nation by his ability to
administer; despite his conscientious devo-
tion to duty, his party refused to give him a
chance to run for the next term. It was dur-
ing his time in office that the Washington
monument was dedicated.
