MISCELLANIA
Jackson conducted the first campaign trip
and was the first President to ride on a train
- a 12 mile journey on the Baltimore and
Ohio. One of the accomplishments in this
second term was to pay off the national debt
in 1835. The federal government was collect-
ing more in taxes than it was spending. The
next year, an act was passed to distribute
surplus federal funds to the States.
