CHAP.
LXXIII.

On payment 
of money justly
due, property
vested
in trustee, &c.

                                LAWS of MARYLAND.

private debt due him from the said William Hammond, Be it enacted, with the
consent of the said David McMechen, That upon payment, by all or any of the
creditors of the said William Hammond, of such sum or sums of money as any
two of three persons, to be appointed by the chancellor, shall adjudge to be
justly due from the said William Hammond to the said David McMechen, for or
on account of the bonds given by the said William Hammond, David McMechen
and Thomas Yates, to Michael John Harris, and for and on account of a private
debt alleged to be due from the said William Hammond to the said David
McMechen in one of the debts aforesaid, in such case all the right, title and
interest, of the said David McMechen, in the property mentioned in the deeds
aforesaid, and all right, title and interest, in the proceeds of the same, shall
cease, and be thereupon vested in the trustee of the said William Hammond to be
appointed by virtue of this act, for the benefit of his creditors, or such of them
as shall make payment to the said David McMechen as aforesaid.


 
 
 

S. Steward to
give father
security, &c.

    XVI.  And, whereas it is represented to this general assembly, that the said
Stephen Steward hath obtained letters of administration on the estate of his
father, and given security that may become insufficient, and that the said Stephen
Steward is in possession of a considerable real estate which belonged to his father,
Be it enacted, That before the said Stephen Steward shall be released, or have
or receive any benefit by this act, that he shall give such farther and ample
security for the administration of his father's estate, as the chancellor, on
examination into the value of the said estate, and the sufficiency of the present
securities, shall think proper, and shall also give such securities as the chancellor
shall approve, that the said Stephen Steward, his executors or administrators,
descended to him, or so much thereof as may be necessary to pay all his father's
debts, or that he will convey to a trustee or trustees to be appointed by the said
chancellor aforesaid, on behalf of the said creditors, all the real estate that hath
descended to him as heir at law of his said father, for the use and benefit of the
creditors of his father, with power to sell the said estate, or so much as may be
necessary, on the terms, and according to the directions, of the chancellor, for
the payment of the debts of his father, and in trust to pay the surplus (if any)
to the said Stephen Steward.

                                            CHAP. LXXIV.
An ACT to settle and pay the civil list, and other expences of
                                            civil government.
Preamble.     WHEREAS those who dedicate their time, abilities and labour, to the
public, ought to receive a reasonable and adequate compensation or
their services;
Officers salaries.     II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the several
officers of civil government, for the time being, shall be entitled to receive at the
rate of the following salaries, in current money, for the ensuing year, to wit:
The chancellor, as judge of the land-office, one hundred pounds; the treasurer
of the western shore, six hundred pounds; the treasurer of the eastern shore,
one hundred and fifty pounds; the auditor, two hundred pounds; the clerk of
the council, two hundred and fifty pounds; the clerk of the senate, thirty
pounds; the clerk of the house of delegates, seventy-five pounds; the printer
to the state, four hundred and fifty pounds; the messenger to the council, fifty
pounds.
Monies to be
first applied,
&c.
    III.  And be it enacted, That all monies which shall remain in the treasury,
after discharging the journal of accounts, and all monies heretofore appropriated
to the use of congress, which shall hereafter be received, and all unappropriated
money which may come into the treasury, be first applied to the payment of the
civil list for the ensuing year.
