XXXV.

                                LAWS of MARYLAND.

of the balances due to them as securities of John Beall, collector of the
tax for Prince-George's county in the years seventeen hundred and eighty-four
and seventeen hundred and eighty-five, may be extended unto the first day of
January, in the year seventeen hundred and ninety-three; and the same appearing
reasonable, because the petitioners have but lately got possession of the books
and papers of the said John Beall, and for that reason have not been able to proceed
to a collection of the said balances,

    II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That Humphrey
Belt, Sarah Brookes, Richard Cramphin, Leonard Deakins and Samuel Shekell,
securities of John Beall, collector of the taxes for Prince-George's county in the
years seventeen hundred and eighty-four and seventeen hundred and eighty-five,
shall have full power and authority to proceed, agreeably to law, in the collection
of all balances which may be due to them as securities aforesaid, until the first
day of January, in the year seventeen hundred and ninety-three, any law to the
contrary notwithstanding.

                                            CHAP. XXXVI.
An ACT to enable Martha Howard, executrix of Benjamin Howard,
    late collector of the public taxes for one of the districts of
    Anne-Arundel county, and late sheriff of said county, and
    executrix of Joseph Howard, her late husband, one of the
    securities of the said Benjamin Howard, to collect the balances
    due to him as collector and sheriff as aforesaid.
Preamble.     WHEREAS it appears to this general assembly, from the petition of
Martha Howard, executrix of Benjamin Howard, and of Joseph 
Howard, late of Anne-Arundel county, deceased, that Benjamin
Howard was, in his life-time, collector of the public taxes in the year seventeen
hundred and eighty-six, for one of the districts of Anne-Arundel county, and
was also sheriff of said county from the month of November, seventeen hundred
and eighty-eight, until the time of his death, in the month of April, one thousand
seven hundred and ninety-one, and that the aforesaid Joseph Howard was
one of the securities of the said Benjamin Howard, and that the collection of the
taxes for the said district, and also of the county charges and officers fees in said
county, was left unfinished by the said Benjamin Howard, and that the collection
of the balances due in sid county, is impracticable, without a power to execute
for the same;

    II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the said Martha
Howard be and she is hereby empowered to appoint, in writing, a fit and proper
person or persons to receive and collect the balances due to the said Benjamin
Howard, as collector of the public taxes for one of the districts of Anne-Arundel
county, and as sheriff and collector of the county charges of said county, under
such allowance and commission as they may think proper and agree for; which
person, so appointed, shall have the like power and authority to receive, collect
and execute for, the arrears and balances before mentioned, as the said Benjamin
Howard at any time had as sheriff and collector as aforesaid, until the first day
of March, seventeen hundred and ninety-three, and the like power and remedy
to settle with the deputies of the said Benjamin Howard, and to compel payment
of any balance due from them, as the said Benjamin Howard at any time had,
and all monies, when collected, shall be applied and paid as the said Benjamin
Howard, on his receipt thereof, ought to have paid and applied the same, and
the balance, if any, shall be considered as the personal estate of the said Benjamin
Howard, and disposed of as such; and the said Martha Howard may take such
bond and security of the persons by her employed, as she may think proper:
Provided, that nothing in this act shall discharge any of the securities, or the said
executrix, and that no greater commission than six per centum for collection, shall
be allowed against the estate of the said Benjamin Howard.
