  XIX.

                                LAWS of MARYLAND.

    V.  And be it enacted, That hereafter the county court to be held for the said
county in September in course, or by adjournment, shall be authorised to lay the
annual assessment on the property within the said county for defraying the expences
thereof.

                                            CHAP. XX.
An ACT to empower the justices of Dorchester county court to
                        lease out the prison lands of said county.
Preamble.     WHEREAS the justices of Dorchester county court, by their petition
to this general assembly, set forth, that there was certain lands in
Dorchester county set apart for the use of the prison of the said
county, which, they were of opinion, was much more than necessary for that
purpose, and praying a law might pass empowering them to lease out said lands
(after reserving as much as may be necessary for said prison) for a term not exceeding
ninety-nine years, renewable for ever; and the general assembly thinking
the prayer of said justices reasonable,
Land to be
laid out, &c.
    II.  Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the justices of
Dorchester county court are hereby empowered and directed to lay out (after reserving
as much land as may by them be thought necessary for said prison) the
prison land in Dorchester county into convenient lots, not exceeding forty feet
in front on the street or streets on which they front, and have the same carefully
surveyed, bounded and numbered, and have a fair plot and certificate made thereof,
and have the same recorded among the land records of Dorchester county.
Lots to be
sold, &c.
    III.  And be it enacted, That the justices aforesaid shall have full power and
authority, and they are hereby directed, to set up the said lots at public sale to the
highest bidder, at their next June or October court, for a premium to be paid by
the purchaser or purchasers, and to grant leases not exceeding ninety-nine years,
renewable for ever, on an annual ground rent to be paid by such purchaser or
purchasers.

signed by the
clerk, &c.
    IV.  And be it enacted, That the lease or leases aforesaid shall be signed by the
clerk of said court, under the direction of the justices aforesaid, which shall be
valid in law; and the said clerk shall enter a copy of all such lease or leases, and
proceedings relative to the prison land aforesaid, on the lands records of Dorchester
county, and a reasonable compensation shall be allowed him in the county
levy, by the justices aforesaid, for recording said leases and proceedings.
On noncompliance,
justices
to bring
suit, &c.
    V.  And be it enacted, That in case of noncompliance of the parties who purchase
leases of said lands of the justices aforesaid, that the said justices and their
successors shall have full power to bring suit or suits against the delinquent purchasers,
or to recover payment for the annual rents by suits, or by distress and
sale of the property found on the premises.
How the money
is to be 
applied.
    VI.  And be it enacted, That all money arising from such sales and ground
rents, shall go to the credit of said county in discharge of so much of the public
levy of said county.

A Supplement to the act to enable the securities of Christopher
    Edelen, deceased, and his administrator, to collect the balances
    due to him as collector of the tax, and as sheriff, of Frederick
    county.
