LXXIII. |

be put into the custody and possession of the sheriff of Anne-Arundel
county for the time being, and so shall remain and continue in
the custody and possession of such sheriff, and his successors, as
a public
prison for Anne-Arundel county. |
Justices to levy
money, &c. |
III. And be
it enacted, That the justices of Anne-Arundel county for
the time being be and they hereby authorised and directed, at their
August
courts in the years seventeen hundred and eighty-six, seventeen hundred
and eighty-seven, and seventeen hundred and eighty-eight, to impose
on
the assessable property of the said county, the sum of fifteen hundred
pounds current money, to be assessed in three equal portions, together
with an allowance to the collector of four per cent. for collection,
which
sum so assessed shall be collected by the collector of Anne-Arundel
county
aforesaid as other county taxes are collected, and when so collected
shall,
by the said sheriff be paid to the commissioners aforesaid, or the
major
part of them, to be by them applied in purchasing the ground and erecting
the said prison. |
And pay a
certificate obtained,
&c. |
IV. And be it
enacted, That the justices of Anne-Arundel county shall
pay unto the commissioners aforesaid, or the major part of them, a
certificate
by them obtained for the damage done the old prison by the continental
soldiers, amounting to the sum of eleven hundred and fifty-three
pounds sixteen shillings and five-pence current money, to be by the
said
commissioners applied in erecting the said prison. |

to prison, &c. |
V. And be it
enacted, That the judges of the general court and the
chancellor, shall have a right to commit to the said prison, and any
person
by them committed shall be received into the said prison under the
care of such officer as shall b by them respectively appointed. |
How vacancies
are to be
filled. |
VI. And be it
enacted, That in case any of the said commissioners shall
die, remove, or be incapable to act, the residue, or the major part
of them,
shall fill up the vacancy. |

CHAP. LXXIV.
An ACT to settle and pay the civil list, and other expences
of civil government. |
Preamble. |
WHEREAS those who dedicate their time, abilities
and labour,
to the public, ought to receive a reasonable and adequate
compensation for their services, |
Officers salaries,
&c. |
II. Be it enacted,
by
the General Assembly of MAryland, That the several
officers of civil government for the time being, shall be entitled
to receive
at the rate of the following salaries in current money for the ensuing
year,
to wit: Each member of the council two hundred pounds, the chancellor,
as judge of the land-office, two hundred pounds current money, the
treasurer of the western shore five hundred pounds of current money,
the
treasurer of the eastern shore two hundred and fifty pounds, the clerk
of
the council two hundred and fifty pounds, the messenger to the council
seventy-five pounds, the clerk of the senate seventy-five pounds, the
clerk
of the house of delegates one hundred pounds, the clerk of the court
of
appeals thirty pounds, the printer to the state five hundred pounds,
the
deputy to the treasurer of the western shore two hundred and fifty
pounds,
the auditor-general four hundred and fifty pounds, the deputy auditor
one hundred and seventy-five pounds. |
To be paid
quarterly, &c. |
III. And be
it enacted, That the said salaries shall be paid quarterly
out of the arrearages of the taxes due for the year seventeen hundred and |
