CHAPTER 143.

AN ACT to provide for taking the vote of the people of Montgomery county for or against the re-division of said county into twelve election districts at the election to be held in the fall of eighteen hundred and seventy-six.

Determine by ballot.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the qualified and registered voters of Montgomery county shall determine by ballot at the election for electors of President and Vice President of the United States in the fall of eighteen hundred and seventy-six, whether or not said county shall be re-divided into twelve election districts.

SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That at said election the ballots to be cast shall have written or printed on them in words, "For the re-division of the county into twelve election districts, " or "Against the redi-vision of the county into twelve election districts, " and the said ballots so cast, immediately after said election shall be carefully counted by the judges of said election in each of the districts of said county, and the presiding judges of said districts, or in case of inability to attend, either of the other judges shall at the time they cast up the vote for electors of President and Vice-President of the United States, also cast up the vote cast for and against the re-division of said county into twelve election districts, and certify the result of said voting to the Clerk of the Circuit Court for said county, who shall file the same in

his office and certify the results of the same under his hand and seal of his office to the county commissioners of said county.

SEC. 3. And be it enacted, That if it shall appear by the returns of the judges of said election that a majority of the votes cast at said election has been cast for the re-division of said county into twelve election districts, then the county commissioners shall before the first day of June in the year eighteen hundred and seventy-seven lay out said county into
