24 COMPTROLLER'S REPORT cessityof such a measure; and I respectfully recommend the passage of a law terminating the fiscal year on the thirtieth day of September. Under the impression that additional clerical force would be requisite in order to conduct the business of the Comptroller's, office, authority was asked at the last session to employ an as- sistant Clerk. The request was not granted, and the under- signed, finding it impossible to execute the revenue laws of the State with the aid of a single Clerk, was obliged to procure an' assistant. He respectfully assures the Legislature that such a step was absolutely necessary, and he asks that the Clerk, so em- ployed, may be paid for his services, and authority given to con- tinue him in the office. PHILIP F. THOMAS, Comptroller. |
