xber 10th. 1690 ( 18 ) Know all men by these presents that I Joseph: ffreeman Carpenter of the County of Somerset in the Province of Maryland my Heirs Execcutors or assigns am held and firmly bound unto Peter Whaples his Heirs Execcutors Administrators or Assigns, six thousand pounds of tob good bright Sound merchantable tobacco and Caske to be paid upon demand to the said Peter Whaples or his Certain Attorney Execcutors Administrators or Assigns, to which payment well and truly to be made, I bind my Selfe my Heirs, Extrs and Administrators firmly by these presents, Sealed with my Seal, dated the twenty ninth day of december in the year of our Lord 1688. Charles: Tindall. her Jeane X Yeavous marke The Deposition of George Benson aged fourty Seaven years or thereabouts, Declareth that being at worke at the house of William Harper sometime in September last past, did there hear Nick: Hartman say that he was ready to give Peter Whaples his Bill for the tobacco that Joseph ffreeman was indebted unto the said Whaples, provided the said Whaples, would deliver up the said ffreemans Bill, But the said Hartman questioning whether the said Whaples had any Bill of the said ffreeman and so went and forbid Capt Smith to pay any tobacco unto the said Peter Whaples and further ye depont saith not signum Sworne before us. 10 ber 9th. 1690 Geo: ?? Benson Tho Jones John: King - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Deposition of Mary Webb, wife to Richard Webb, and Elizabeth wife to Lodowick: ffleming Peter: Whaples and Nicholas: Harnell being at the house of Lodowick: ffleming. Peter Whaples asked Nicholas: Hartnell, why he did not marry Mary ffreeman Nicholas: Hartnell replyed, what was that to him. he would first Cast him and then Marry her afterwards, this the deponents sayeth and not further Sworne before us 10ber. ye 9th. 1690. Thomas: Jones Jno: King. --- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Deposition of Michael: Dunnahoe aged thirty one years or thereabouts saith that ye Deponant being at the house of Mary ffreeman Sometime in November in the year of our Lord 1689. Peter:Whaples Came to the said house and demanded of the said Mary some tobacco that was due to him from her husband Joseph ffreeman, and at Severall other times the said Peter Came and demanded of the said Mary in a Rayling abusive manner the said tobacco, the sum was about nine thousand pounds of tobacco, your Deponent saith that he heard Nicholas Hartnell make severall offers to the said Peter in Order to the satisfaction of the sd debt, Provided he would discharge the said Joseph and accept of him the said Nicholas for pay and lett the said Mary ffreeman live in quietness, and the said Nicholas did deliver the said Peter a Bill of Capt.Henry Smiths of about three thousand pounds of tobacco (as they said) and Offered him his Bill for the remainder upon which your deponent thought they had agree. Some time after your Deponent saith that having Some discourse with the said Peter, he did hear him the said Peter say that he would not accept of the sd Nicholas and release, the said Joseph and take an uncertainty for a certainty, for he did not know how soon Nicholas might run away, when he had engaged for the said tobacco he not being a house keeper, and Joseph ffreeman was a house keeper and might come sometime or other, replying to your Deponent, that he knew how to secure himselfe other wayes. Your Deponent likewise saith, that he hear John: ffreeman, likewise offer him to pay two thousand pounds |
