leered, to the Treasurer of said town, and take from
him duplicate receipts, one of which shall be pre-
sented to the Mayor within ten days after its date,
to he used as evidence of the amount therein named
having been paid into the treasury: and the said jus-
tices shall he entitled to receive as fees, in cases for
a violation of tie ordinances aforesaid, the same as
allowed thorn in other criminal proceedings.
137. The May or and Council shall furnish the
Justices of the Peace having their offices in Hagers-
town, certified copies of all the ordinances relative
to crimes and punishments.
138. If any of the Justices of tie Peace fail or
neglect, in the discharge of any of the duties imposed
upon them, to pay over the fines to the Treasurer as
directed, they shall, on conviction in the Circuit
Court for Washington county, be fined in the sum
of fifty dollars, or be imprisoned in the county jail
for a term not exceeding ten months, or both, in the
. discretion of the court.
139. The Mayor may appoint police for said town,
not exceeding four in number, and report such ap-
pointment to the Council at their next meeting, and
if the Council ratify said appointments, then said
person or persons shall act as policemen for said
town, for one year from the date of said appointment
unless removed by the Mayor for misconduct, and
in case of removal or vacancy, the Mayor shall ap-
point others for the unexpired term, subject to ratifi-
cation by the Council; and that said police shall
disperse and suppress all disorderly assemblies in
said town, preserve the peace and quiet of said town,
arrest all offenders and take them before a Justice
of the Peace, having Ins office in said town, for trial,
and execute the process of said justices in matters
relative to said town, or preserving the peace thereof;
and that said police shall each receive, out of the
corporation fund, a sum not less than fifteen dollars
and not more than twenty-five dollars per month for
their services, and the fees allowed by law to con-
stables in criminal cases.
