CHAPTER 319.
AN ACT to incorporate the Lippincott Institute for
the Education of Young Ladies.
SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Rev. Joshua A. Lippincott, as princi-
pal, and Rev. Edward R. Ames, D. D.; Rev. Littleton
F. Morgan, D. D.; Eov. Thomas M. Eddy, D. D.; Rev.
William H. Pitcher, William J. Hiss, Wm. IT. Craw-
ford, George W. Corner, and Alexander M. Carter,
and Henry Shirk as an Advisory Board of Trustees,
and their successors as such Principal and Trustees,
be and they are hereby incorporated by the name of
the Lippincott Institute for the Education of Young
Ladies, and as such shall have succession, may have
and use a common seal, be capable to sue and be
sued, plead and be impleaded in any court of law or
equity, to make by-laws, rules and regulations not
contrary to the laws of this State; and said Trustees
shall have power to nil vacancies occurring in said
Board of Trustees by resignation, refusing to serve,
death, or otherwise, upon the nomination of the
Principal of said Institute, and that the number of
said Trustees thus to be perpetuated shall not be less
than five or more than thirteen.
SEC. 2. And be it enacted, That the Board of Trus-
tees shall be divided as nearly as may be into three
-equal classes, to serve respectively for two, four and
six years, and that the regular term of service, upon
the expiration of these terms, [and] shall be for six
years regularly thereafter; and if any Trustee shall
fail to serve out his full term, the person substituted
in his place shall serve for the residue of the term
only for which he was chosen, and that, at the first
meeting of the Trustees after this Act shall go into
effect, they shall determine by lot who shall serve for
the two, who for the four, and who for the six years;
any or all of whom shall be eligible for re-appoint-
ment.
SEC. 3. And be it enacted. That said corporation
shall have, and is hereby invested with full power to
grant diplomas to such pupils as satisfactorily corn-
