ers of Baltimore city :

Baltimore, March 1, 1870.
To Hon. Ferdinand C. Latrobe,

Speaker of the House of Delegates :

SIR : It becomes our painful duty, and it is also with un-
affected sorrow and regret, that we communicate to you and
through you to the House of Delegates of Maryland, an an-
nouncement of the death of our esteemed colleague, Lefevre
Jarrclt, Esq., President of the Board of Police Commission-
ers for Baltimore city, which occurred suddenly on Friday
last, at twenty minutes before nine o'clock, P. M.

Mr. McLane submitted the following message :

BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES,

March 2, 1870
Gentlemen of the Senate.:

We respectfully propose, with the concurrence of your
Honorable Body, " a joint meeting of the two Houses of the
General Assembly of Maryland," on Thursday, March the
3rd, at twelve o'clock noon, in the hall of the House of Dele-
gates, to elect a Police Commissioner for the City of Balti-
more, to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lefevre Jar-
rett, and to elect a Commissioner for the full term of four
years from March —, 1871, as required by Act of Assembly
of 1867, chapter 367.

Which was read.

Mr. Bowlus submitted the following amendment:
Strike out the word "third," before the word "instant," and
insert the word tenth.

Which was adopted.

The question then recurring upon assenting to the mes-
sage, as amended, it was assented to, and sent to the Senate.

Mr. Gatch presented the following petitions against the
removal of the county seat of Baltimore to county.
