On motion of Mr. Watkins,

Mr. Bowlus was chosen temporary chairman.

Mr. Blake moved that the House now proceed to the elec-
tion of Speaker.

Mr. Watkins submitted the following amendment
"And that said election be held by ballot."
Which was adopted.

The motion submitted by Mr. Blake was than decided in
the affirmative, and

The House proceeded to the nomination of Speaker.

Mr. Blake nominated Hon. Ferdinand C. Latrobe, of Bal-
timore city.

Mr. Baldwin nominated Hon. E. G. Kilbourn, of Anne
Arundel county.

Mr. Biddle nominated Hon. William M. Merrick of How-
ard county.

On motion of Mr. Hoblitzell,

The nominations were closed.

On motion of Mr. Colton,

Messrs. Colton and Chapman were appointed tellers.

The House then proceeded to ballot for Speaker.

Upon counting the ballots, it was found that

Hon. Ferdinand C. Latrobe had received 54 votes.
Hon. E. G. Kilbourn, 5 votes.
Hon. Wm. M. Merrick, 21 votes.
Two blank ballots being cast.
