may deem necessary for the purpose of defraying
the expenses of said corporation, and of opening,
closing, extending and improving the streets, lanes
or alleys in said village, and of building, repair-
ing or improving the public wells and pumps and
fire engines belonging to said corporation, in such
manner as they may deem expedient, with full
power to collect the same as is hereinafter provided.

 

Sec. 20. And be it enacted, The said Commis-
sioners shall, as soon after the expiration of the
time for hearing appeals as practicable, proceed to
ascertain the amount necessary to be levied for the
use of the said corporation and the rate of taxation
and shall cause to he made and delivered to the
bailiff a book containing an alphabetical list of the
tax-payers in said village together with the aggre-
gate assessment of each and the rate of taxation
and amount of taxes due and owing from each tax-
payer under said levy and assessment.

Appeals.

Sec. 21. Be it enacted, That the public ground of
Denton, on which the market-house, lodge-house,
and school-house stand, and all the public ground,
between the market-house and school-house, and
between the school-house and Gray street, and ten
feet of ground immediately contiguous to the west
side of said market-house, through from Market
street to Gay street, is vested in the said President
and Commissioners and their successors; provided,
they shall not erect thereon any other than public
buildings for the use of said town; the house over
the market-house, which was built by the members
of Washington Lodge, number fifty-nine, of Free

Public
grounds.

and Accepted Masons shall revert to, vest in and
belong to the master, wardens and members of
Temple Lodge, number one hundred and twenty-
eight, of Free and Accepted Masons, who shall
have immediate possession of the same, they and
their successors forever.

Sec. 22. And be it enacted, That immediately
upon the receipt by him of the book specified in a
preceding section the bailiff shall proceed to collect
all taxes levied by the said Commissioners and
shall pay over the same, whenever required so to
do by the said Commissioners, to the Treasurer of
said Corporation. And if any person shall neglect
or refuse to pay said taxes or shall neglect or refuse
