carry out the provisions of this law shall be paid
out of the funds of the county on the order of the
Commissioners ; and all bills of costs for hire of
persons or teams, or for other expenses incurred in
repairing the public roads, when approved bv the
County Commissioners by endorsement thereon,
shall be receivable for the party to whom due, or
his assignees in writing, in payment of county tax-
es due by the lawful holders thereof.

And be it further enacted, That the several super-
visors shall make general repairs of the roads with-
in their districts at least twice in each year, once
prior to the fifteenth of May and once prior to the
fifteenth of September ; and the County Commis-

sioners shall fix and regulate, from time to time,
the prices to be paid by supervisors for the hire of
necessary teams and laborers to execute any work
under this law.

Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the several
supervisors shall report semi-annually, in Jane
and November, to the County Commissioners, the
state of the roads within their districts, and the
expenses by them incurred under this law, the
amount of money paid out by them in construct-
ing and repairing roads, with the vouchers

for the same, that each supervisor shall be en-
titled to receive an annual salary of not exceeding
three dollars per clay for each day he is actually
employed on the roads for the said Commissioners,
and shall be wholly exempt, during his time of

service, from militia duty and from service on ju-
ries ; and moreover, no supervisor shall be allowed
to hire his own carts, teams, or laborers, in his
own private employment, for any service on said
public roads.

Sec. 6. In addition to the proper proportion of
the general road tax levied for ordinary expenses
of roads and bridges within the county, the County
Commissioners shall have power in their discretion,
upon the petition of thirty or more landowners
within any road district, to levy upon the assessa-
ble property within such road district an additional

special tax, of not more than ten cents in the hun-
dred dollars, to be collected as other county taxes,
and to be expended under the direction of the
County Commissioners in the improvement of the
roads within said district.
