In accordance with the 1987 Chesapeake Bay
Agreement, the Governor appointed the Local
Government Advisory Committee on the
Chesapeake Bay Program in April 1988 The Corn
|
mittee presents to the Chesapeake Executive Coun
cil the concerns and opinions of the local govern-
ments in the Chesapeake Bay watershed It also
informs local governments about the Chesapeake
Bay Program
The Committee has twenty four members Mary
land, Pennsylvania, and Virginia each are represented
by six members appointed by their respective gover
nors The District of Columbia is represented by six
members appointed by the Mayor

Formed m 1970, the Coastal States Organization
was created to represent state governors m oceanic
and coastal affairs The Organization expresses the
states' shared interests and concerns m interstate and
federal marine resource programs and policies It helps
coastal states develop and implement national coastal
policy and resolve national coastal issues without
mterfenng m other state objectives The Organization
provides a nonparusan forum for debate, discussion,
and resolution of national coastal issues and problems
As an information clearinghouse, it also supphes
coastal research and data analysis to Congress, mem
ber states, the media, and the general public
Presently, the Organization consists of delegates
appointed by the governors of thirty coastal states
and five territories Maryland has been a member
since 1970
