The University of Maryland Medical System was
established in 1984 as a private, nonprofit corporation
(Chapter 288,Acts of 1984). The System is responsible
for patient care, medical education, community health
services, and emergency medical treatment provided
by the medical systems of the University of Maryland.
These systems include the University of Maryland
Hospital; the RAdams Cowley Shock Trauma Center;
the University of Maryland Cancer Center; and the
James Lawrence Kernan Hospital, Inc.
University of Maryland Hospital. In 1823, the
University of Maryland Hospital was formed as the
Baltimore Infirmary by the faculty of the University
of Maryland School of Medicine. The Hospital re
ceived its present name in 1897 and affiliated with the
University of Maryland Medical System in 1984.
University Hospital (as it often is called) provides
patient care, education, and research. It is a regional
referral center for cardiac care, high-risk obstetrics and
neonatology, oncology, neuro care, pediatrics, trans-
plant and women's health services. In addition, Uni-
versity Hospital remains the primary teaching hospital
for the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center was
founded in 1961 as the clinical hub of the Maryland
Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems.
Following the reorganization of the Institute in
1993, the Center continues under the management
of the University of Maryland Medical System. The
Center is Maryland's primary adult trauma center,
specializing in head and spinal injuries.
University of Maryland Cancer Center was
formed in 1981. The Center is the focus of cancer-
related work within the School of Medicine of the
University of Maryland at Baltimore, and the Uni-
versity of Maryland Medical System.

The James Lawrence Kernan Hospital, Inc.,
serves orthopedic, plastic surgery, neurosurgery,
dental and medical patients. It originated in 1895
as the Hospital for Crippled and Deformed Chil-
dren and became affiliated in 1986 with the Uni-
versity of Maryland Medical System.
In 1995, Kernan Hospital and the Montebello
Rehabilitation Center legally merged. From this
union, the new William Donald Schacfer Rehabili-
tation Center began at Kernan Hospital in April
1996. The Center is a 128-bed inpatient rehabili-
tation center. It treats patients with brain or spinal
cord injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis and other
neurological disorders, and orthopedic disorders.
A subacute rehabilitation unit will open in 1996.
The University of Maryland Medical System is
governed by the Board of Directors. The Board con-
sists of between twenty-two and twenty-seven voting
members appointed to five-year terms by the Govcr
nor. Ex officio, six are nonvoting members. The Board
elects the Chief Executive Officer of the Corporation.

The Chair of the Board of Directors appoints a
Community Advisory Council (known as the Farmer-
Mitchell Community Advisory Council), whose mem-
bers serve three-year terms. The Committee advises
the Board on services offered by the Corporation that
are of importance to the communitv (Code Education
Article, sees. 13-1B-01 through 13-1B-13).

The Maryland Venture Capital Trust was
formed in 1990 (Chapter 222, Acts of 1990). The
Trust provides an opportunity for Maryland State
and local public pension funds and the State of
Maryland and its political subdivisions to invest a
portion of their funds in venture capital invest-
ments. The Trust has sold $19.1 million of benefi-
cial interests, consisting of $15 million from the
State Retirement and Pension System; $2.1 million
from the Fire and Police Employees' Retirement
System of the City of Baltimore, and the Employ-
