Origins of the Center for Fnvironmental and Fs
tuanne Studies date to 1925 whin a research station
was started on Solomons Island b\ Dr Reginald V
Truitt That facility became the Chcsapeake Biological
Laboratory which affiliated with the University of
Maryland's Natural Resources Institute in 1961 The
Institute's federation of laboratories relocated and
reorganized in 1973 as the Center for Environmental
and Estuanne Studies In 1975, the Institute was
abolished and its duties were assigned to the Center
(Chapter 526. Acts of 1975)
The Center is the lead institution for environmental
studies within the University of Maryland System Its
three laboratories are strategically located to provide
access to Maryland's principal environments and their
natural resources Center programs feature research on
natural and disturbed ecosystems and their living re
sources, and direct service to the pubhc and State
government They also provide introductory and tech
meal environmental education and, with other Univer
sitv institutions, offer graduate instruction through
uruversitywide programs, such as the Marine Estu
anne Environmental Sciences Program

Much of the Center's research focuses on the
Chesapeake Bay and its watershed, but study also con
cems world environmental issues, such as global waim
ing, biodiversity, and ecological economics Additional
research covers watershed ecology (lakes, streams, for
ests, and animals), fishenes science, environmental policy,
environmental chemistry and toxicology, oceanography,
aquaculture, and wetlands Education focuses on ccol
ogy of coastal systems, resource analysis, the process ol
pubhc decision making in matters that affect environ
mental quality, and environmental education in coopcra
non with pubhc agencies and groups
At the Horn Point Fnvironmental I aboratorv, the
Center has administrative offices and facilities on a
721 acre site by the Choptank R)\ cr neai Cambridge
This property originally was given to the C it\ of
Cambridge by the late Francis P Du Pout In 1971,
it was conveyed by Cambridge to the State toi use b\
the University of Maryland Here, hdtchenes are
maintained for shellfish and hnhsh propagation, and
research examines biological and physical oceanogra
phy, aquaculture and seafood science, and wetlands
and submerged aquatic vegetation
The Chesapeake Biological Laboratory at Solo
mons Island on the Patuxent Ri\ er, holds the C en
ter's fleet of research vessels and conducts research
on fisheries science, environmental polic\, and en
vironmental chemistry and toxicology On the
Frostburg State Um\ersit} campus, the Appala
chian Environmental Laboratory studies the ecol
ogy of the Chesapeake Bav watershed, including
the ecology of lakes and streams, animal beha\for
and evolutionary biology, and forest ecology
