St Mary's College of Maryland originally was
chartered as St Mary's Seminar} in 1840 (Chapter
190, Acts of 1839) In 1845, it was incorporated as
St Mary's Female Seminary (Chapter 257, Acts of
1845) The Seminary became St Mary's Seminary
Junior College in 1949 (Chapter 676, Acts of
1949) As a State institution, the College became
St Mary's College of Maryland in 1964 (Chapter
59, Acts of 1964)
In 1967, the College was reorganized as a four
year college of liberal arts and sciences Within the
State college system, it is the only four year mstitu
tion devoted to the liberal arts The College was
designated a public honors college in 1992 (Chap
ter 209, Acts of 1992)
The College is governed by a board of twenty
five trustees Upon recommendation of the Board
of Trustees, the Governor appoints twenty three
members with Senate advice and consent Twenty-
two are chosen for six year terms, one student
serves a one year term Two serve ex officio (Code
Education Article, sees 14-201 through 14-206)

The Maryland Stadium Authority was created in
1986 to select a site for new sports stadiums in the
Baltimore metropolitan area and acquire, con
struct, and operate these facilities (Chapter 283,
Acts of 1986) The stadiums are for professional
football and baseball
Sports Stadiums The Authority selected the site
of Camden Yards in downtown Baltimore for sepa
rate baseball and football facilities (Chapters 122,
123, and 124, Acts of 1987) Ha\ing entered into
a long term lease with the Orioles baseball team,
the Authority acquired the site and constructed
Oriole Park at Camden Yards, a baseball park rhar
