ated in 1990 (Chapter 322, Acts of 1990) The
Panel reviews and recommends to the Secretary of
Housing and Community Development the ap
proval of grants under the Historical and Cultural
Museum Assistance Program In reviewing grant
applications that relate to the care and preservation
of, or access to archival material, the Panel seeks the
advu-e and recommendations of the State Archivist
The Panel includes members appointed by the
Secretary of Housing and Community Develop
ment and three ex officio members (Code 1957,
Art 83B, sees 5 701 through 5 705)

The Banneker Douglass Museum of African-
American Lite and History opened to the public in
February 1984 and was renamed the Banneker
Douglass Museum of African American History
and Culture in 1993 The Museum is both an
exhibit facility and a research center for studies in
African American histon and culture (Code 1957,

the year Maryland celebrated its 350th anniversary

The Historic St Mary's City Commission ongi
nated in 1966 as the St Mary's City Commission
(Chapter 115, Acts of 1966) Formerly under the
Department of Economic and Community Devel
opment, the Commission became part of the De
partment of Housing and Community
Development in 1987 (Chapter 311, Acts of 1987)
The Commission received its present name in 1991
(Chapter 590, Acts of 1991)
The Commission preserves, develops, and main
tains Historic St Mary's City, the site of Maryland's
first capital The Commission studies, preserves,
interprets, and educates the public about Historic
St Mary's City, with emphasis on the 17th century
The Commission may acquire historical and cul-
tural properties necessary for the proper use and
administration of Historic St Mary's City The
Commission also may accept private gifts, as well as
federal. State and local government grants
The Commission has thirteen members Twelve
are appointed to four-year terms by the Go'. ernor with
Senate advice and consent One serves ex officio The
Commission appoints the Executive Director (Code
1957, Art 83B, sees 5-201 through 5 212)

The Jefferson Patterson Historical Park and
Museum at St Leonard, Calvert County, opened
to the public in 1984 On the Patuxent River and
St Leonard's Creek, the Park extends along two
and a half miles of shoreline It is located on the
546 acre Point Farm, which was deeded in trust to
the State by Mary Marvin Breckinndge Patterson
in honor other husband, Jefferson Patterson Here
scientists have found evidence of prehistoric Indian
sites, 10 to 12 million year old invertebrate fossils,
and remnants of early European settlements The
Park and Museum function as an educational, re-
search and recreational facility
