Department of Housing and Community Develop-
ment in 1987 (Chapter 311, Acts of 1987). The
Commission received its present name in 1991
(House Bill 776, Acts of 1991).
The Commission preserves, develops, and main-
tains Historic St. Mary's City
The goal of the Commission is to preserve, stud);
and interpret the site of Maryland's first capital in
the context of the Chesapeake Bay region from
prehistory to the present, with a primary emphasis
on the early colonial period. The Commission is
empowered to acquire historical and cultural

properties necessary for the proper use and ad-
ministration of Historic St. Mary's City The Com-
mission may accept private gifts, as well as federal,
State, and local government grants.
The Commission has thirteen members. Twelve
are appointed to four-year terms by the Governor
with Senate advice and consent. The Chairperson
of the Board of Trustees of St. Mary's College of
Maryland serves ex officio. The Commission ap-
points the Executive Director (Code 1957, Art.
83B, sees. 5-201 through 5-212).
