MARYLAND'S ECONOMY, 1980—1989

From 1980 to 1989, Maryland's service industry
grew at a race of 66%, four times faster than other
industries This sector of the economy consists
mainly of establishments providing services to in-
dividuals, businesses, and government It includes
such diverse enterprises as computer firms, hotels,
auto repair shops, janitonal services, and hospitals
Within the services indusci"}; high tech services,
especially computer and data processing, mush-
roomed at the incredible rate of 106% The largest
concentration of service industries is found in
Montgomery County, where 35 8% of the work
force is employed in services

Scientific and technological research leading to
product development plays an increasing role in the
Stare's economy Federal agencies located in
Maryland such as the National Institutes ofHealth,
National Institute of Standards and Technology, the
National Aeronautics and Space Administration,
Goddard Space Flight Center, and Department of
Defense operations have been a catalyst for the
Scare's technology base Advanced technology
enterprise is especially strong in telecommunica
dons, computer sciences, and biotechnology New
research parks facilitate joint research among
universities, State and federal government instiru
tions, and private industry These parks include The
Johns Hopkins Bayview Research Campus in Bal-
