main units the Civil Litigation Division, Criminal

Division, and Medicaid Fraud Control Unit The
Deputy Attorney General also is responsible for

Agriculture, Department of Budget and Fiscal
Planning, Department of Health and Mental
Hygiene, Department of Human Resources,
Department of Licensing and Regulation, Depart
ment of Personnel, Department of Public Safety

Department of Assessments and Taxation,

The Civil Litigation Division represents the State
and State employees in major federal and State avil
litigation Attorneys in the Division provide support,
either by advising or acting as co-counsel, to agency
counsel involved in or contemplating litigation The
Division reviews all federal and State avil appellate
bnefs and reviews civil complaints for potential suits
to be filed by the State

CORRECTIONAL LITIGATION UNIT

The Correctional Litigation Unit is responsible
for the representation of State's Attorneys in any
lawsuit challenging their official actions, and of
sheriffs where the matter involves correctional
matters The Unit also represents State officials and
employees who are sued in Stare or federal courts
by prisoners for violations of their constitutional
rights in State prisons

prosecute a broad range of criminal activity (Const,

State employees, fraud against the State, multi

violations of State tax laws The Division assists
State's Attorneys' Offices when they need addi
oonal resources or special expertise in a complex
criminal investigation

and Maryland Pubhc Broadcasting Commission
As counsel to this clientele, Division attorneys
handle court litigation, administrative proceed-
