The Governor's Executive Council originated as
the Governor's Advisory Council in 1922 (Chapter
29, Acts of 1922). Itwas reorganized in 1969 as the
Governor's Executive Council to coordinate, direct,
and supervise Srate government (Chapter 156,
Acts of 1969). The Council consists of the Gover-
nor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary of
State, the secretary of each principal department of
the Executive Branch of State government, the
State Superintendent of Schools, the Secretary of
Higher Education, the Director on Aging, and the
Director of Planning. The Governor may appoint
an Executive Secretary for the Council (Code State
Government Article, sees. 8-101, 8-105).

In 1988, the Governor formed the Governor's
Executive Advisory Council (Executive Order
01.01.1988.12). The Council organizes and imple-
ments projects to support State government
programs; develops new projects to benefit
Marylanders; advises the Governor on improve-
ments needed in State government; and promotes
ideas that will enhance Maryland's reputation local-
ly nationally, and internationally.
The Council is organized into highly diversified
subpanels with a major emphasis on drug use reduc-
