The 1965 General Assembly appropriated funds
to establish a permanent center at Maple Run in the
Green Ridge State Forest, Allegany County (Chap-
ter 743, Acts of 1965). The Center opened in 1967
with facilities for thirty-five boys.

Savage Mountain Tfouth Center opened in 1957
after funds were appropriated for more youth cen-
ters in 1956 (Chapter 98, Acts of 1956). The

The Maryland Legal Services Corporation was
established in 1982 (Chapter 829, Acts of 1982).
The Corporation receives and distributes funds for
legal aid to eligible clients in noncriminal proceed-
ings or matters. The Corporation ensures that
grants and contracts are made so as to provide the
most stable, economical, and effective delivery of
legal assistance. It also ensures that eligible clients
in all areas of the State have access to the
Corporation's services.

The Corporation establishes maximum income
levels for client eligibility These are based on a
client's financial inability to pay for competent pri-
vate counsel and other necessary expenses of repre-
sentation. Maximum income levels for eligibility set
by the Corporation may not exceed 50 percent of
the median family income for Maryland, as certified
annually by the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services.
The Corporation is governed by a Board of
Directors, comprised of five lawyers and four non-
lawyers. They are appointed to three-year terms by
the Governor with Senate advice and consent. The
Board appoints the Executive Director who serves
ex officio as a nonvoting Board member (Code
1957, Art. 10, secs. 45A through 45-0).
The Corporation's annual report and a brochure
describing its services are available upon request.

The Lida Lee Tall Learning Resources Center is
a laboratory environment for the study and devel-
opment of early childhood and elementary educa-
tion. The Center enables college students who are
prospective teachers to demonstrate and observe
effective teaching practices. Facilities for research
are made available at the Center for faculty from
teacher education programs, prospective principals,
and experienced teachers in elementary schools.
Created in 1984, the Board of Trustees governs
the Center (Chapter 641, Acts of 1984). The
Board's eleven members are appointed to three-
year terms by the Governor (Code Education Arti-
cle, secs. 24-106 through 24-107).
