Created in 1920, the State Board of Chiropractic
Examiners examines applicants for licenses, investi-
gates all complaints, and reports such complaints to
the State's Attorney, if necessary (Chapter 666, Acts
of 1920). The Board holds two examinations per
year in March and September. It investigates to
ascertain whether schools of chiropractic meet the
requirements of the law. Each person holding a
chiropractic license in Maryland must renew it every
two years with the secretary of the Board (Code
Health Occupations Article, secs. 3-201 through
3-602).
The Board consists of five members appointed
by the Governor with the advice of the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene and Senate advice and
consent. Four must be licensed chiropractors ap-
pointed from a list of qualified individuals submit-
ted to the Governor by the Maryland Chiropractic
Association. The fifth member is a consumer. Mem-
bers serve five-year terms. Authorization for the
Board continues until July 1,1992.

Established in 1884, the State Board of Dental
Examiners regulates the practice of dentistry by
testing the qualifications of candidates for licenses
in dentistry and in dental hygiene (Chapter 150,
Acts of 1884).
All applicants for license to practice dentistry
must be graduates of dental colleges duly incorpo-
rated to grant degrees in Dental Surgery by the laws
of one of the United States or Canada. All appli-
cants for a license to practice dental hygiene must
be graduates of a school for dental hygienists ap-
proved by the State Board of Dental Examiners.
Examinations, held twice a year, are both written
and practical. Every dentist and dental hygienist
must register every two years.
The Board also certifies dental radiation technol-
ogists. After July 1, 1988, an individual may not
practice dental radiation technology in Maryland
unless certified by the Board (Code Health Occu-
pations Article, sec. 4-503.1).

The State Board of Dietetic Practice was created
in 1985 (Chapter 773, Acts of 1985). The Board
licenses dietitians and nutritionists in Maryland.
Licenses to practice dietetics must be renewed with
the Board every two years. The Board protects the
public by setting standards for the practice of dietet-
ics in Maryland.
The Board has seven members appointed to
three-year terms by the Governor. Two are consum-
ers and five are dietitians or nutritionists. Dietitian
or nutritionist members must be licensed to practice
dietetics in Maryland. Of these, one must be en-
gaged primarily in clinical dietetic practice, one in
community or public health dietetic practice, one in
consulting dietetic practice, and the fifth a faculty
member in the field of dietetics or nutritional sci-
ence. Dietitian members must have practiced dietet-
ics for at least five of the past ten years. The
Governor appoints the dietitian and licensed nutri-
tionist members with the advice of the Secretary of
Health and Mental Hygiene and Senate advice and
consent. These members are selected from a list of
ten dietitians and licensed nutritionists submitted
jointly by the Maryland Dietetic Association and
the Presidents of Maryland institutions of higher
education which graduate dietetic practitioners.
Consumer members may not be dietitians or li-
censed nutritionists or have any household mem-
bers who are, and they may not have a financial
interest in providing goods or services to dietitians
or licensed nutritionists, or dietary goods or services
to consumers. Authorization for the Board contin-
ues until July 1995 (Code Health Occupations
Article, secs. 4.5-201 through 4.5-502).
