SECRETARIES OF STATE

In 1838 the office of Secretary of State was cre-
ated by constitutional amendment to replace the
Governor's Council (Chapter 197, sec. 17, Acts of
1836; Chapter 84, Acts of 1837). The Secretary of
State was appointed to an undefined term by the
Governor with the advice and consent of the Sen-
ate. Since the Constitution of 1864 (Art. 2, sec.
23), the Secretary of State's term has been concur-
rent with that of the appointing Governor (Const.
1867, Art. 2, sees. 22, 23).
