DuPont. In 1971, it was conveyed by Cambridge
to the State of Maryland for use by the Universi-
ty.

In addition to the Horn Point laboratories, the
Center consists of the Chesapeake Biological Lab-
oratory at Solomons Island on the Patuxent Riv-
er, the Joint University of Maryland/Department
of Natural Resources Shellfish Biology Program
at Crisfield, and the Appalachian Environmental
Laboratory on the Prostburg State College Cam-
pus. Specialized facilities include research vessels,
controlled growth facilities at the Chesapeake Bio-
logical Laboratory, hatcheries at Horn Point and
Crisfield for shellfish propagation, and compre-
hensive analytical facilities for terrestrial, estua-
rine, and marine environmental sciences.

At present, research programs of the Center in-
elude studies of the Chesapeake Bay and the ac-
companying coastal waters of the mid-Atlantic re-
gion; forests, fish, and wildlife of the land areas of
the State; waste management; and investigations
directed toward basic comprehension of the Mary-
land environment. Educational emphasis includes
estuarine ecology, resource analysis, the process of
public decision-making in matters that affect envi-
ronmental quality, and environmental education
in cooperation with other public agencies and
groups.

Located at the University of Maryland College
Park campus, the Institute for Governmental Ser-
vice assists municipal, county and state agencies
in solving specific problems. It provides a
clearinghouse of information and resources re-
garding state and local governments. The Institute
conducts research and surveys of local, regional
and statewide significance. Reports and studies on
matters of general interest and importance to state
and local governments are issued by the Institute.

The Maryland State Agency for Surplus Proper-
ty is a self-supporting operation sponsored as a
public service by the University of Maryland.
Originally organized in 1947, the present Agency
was created by Executive Order in 1955. The
Agency makes available federal surplus property
to non-profit health or educational institutions
and public agencies in Maryland.

Applications to establish eligibility to partici-
pate in the program are available on request.
