In accordance with 1963 legislation authorizing
the University to establish a campus at Caton-
sville in Baltimore County, the University of
Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) opened ini-
tially to freshmen students in September 1966
(Code Education Article, sec. 13-104f).
The Baltimore County Campus (UMBC) offers
a range of programs in the arts, sciences, social
sciences, and humanities. Master's and doctoral
programs are also offered.

At the College Park Campus (UMCP) instruc-
tion is offered at undergraduate and graduate
levels in almost every discipline. There are the
Colleges of Agriculture, Arts and Humanities, Be-
havioral and Social Sciences, Business and Man-
agement, Education, Engineering, Human Ecolo-
gy, Journalism, Library and Information Services,
Life Sciences, Computer, Mathematical and Phys-
ical Sciences, and Physical Education, Recreation
and Health, and the Schools of Architecture and
Public Affairs.
Headquarters for the Maryland Agricultural
Experiment Station and the Maryland Coopera-
tive Extension Service are located at UMCP.
Among the many research and public service or-
ganizations on campus are the Sea Grant College,
Fire and Rescue Institute, Center on Aging, Sur-
vey Research Center, Engineering Research
Center, Transportation Studies Center, Water Re-
sources Research Center, Bureau for Business and
Economic Research, Institute for Applied Agri-
culture, Institute for Urban Studies, and the Insti-
tute for Governmental Service (IGS). The latter
institute helps Maryland municipalities, counties,
and State agencies solve specific problems. IGS al-
so houses the University's Office of Public Service,
which is designed to make it easier for the citizens
of Maryland and the National Capital region to
find and use the extensive resources of the five-
campus University system.
