The Family Health Administration was estab-
lished by the Department in 1987. The Adminis-
tration is responsible for the Office of Chronic and
Rehabilitation Facilities, which oversees Deer's
Head Center, Montebello Center, and Western
Maryland Center; the Office of Maternal and
Child Health; and the Special Supplemental Food
Program for Women, Infants, and Children
(WIC) administered by the WIC Office.

The Office directs two chronic and rehabilitative
hospital centers—Deer's Head Center and West-
ern Maryland Center. Montebello Center is oper-
ated through a contract with the University of
Maryland. That contract is monitored by the Of-
fice of Chronic and Rehabilitation Facilities. The
Office also administers the Rehabilitation Infor-
mation Service.

Created in 1984, the Rehabilitation Information
Service provides information on rehabilitation
services to persons who have suffered amputation,
stroke, spinal cord injury, or head trauma (Chap-
ter 416, Acts of 1984). The Service also responds
to the needs of other disabled individuals. Inquir-
ies are accepted from anywhere in Maryland
(Code Health—General Article, sec. 20-108).

Authorized by Chapter 994, Acts of 1945,
Deer's Head Center was established in 1950. It is
the regional facility for chronically ill and elderly
adults in need of physical medicine and rehabilita-
tion services, or general medical care for chronic
disease or terminal illness. The Center also oper-
ates a kidney dialysis facility for area residents.
Deer's Head Center provides the services of a
chronic disease hospital (including a small hospice
service) and a comprehensive care facility, as well
as outpatient and end-stage kidney dialysis, and
outpatient rehabilitation therapy. The licensed ca-
pacity for the Center is 188 hospital beds and 33
comprehensive care beds (Code Health—General
Article, sec. 19-502).

MONTEBELLO CENTER

Authorized by Chapter 412, Acts of 1951,
Montebello Center opened in 1953. Montebello is
a comprehensive care rehabilitation center, ac-
credited by the Commission of Accreditation of
Rehabilitation Facilities. Funded through the De-
partment of Health and Mental Hygiene, the
Center is operated as an integral part of the Uni-
versity of Maryland Medical System.
The Center provides intensive rehabilitation ser-
vice to patients with head and spinal cord injury
and other trauma, stroke, and rehabilitable disa-
bilities. It also provides outpatient rehabilitation
services (Code Health—General Article, sees.
19-501 through 19-513).
