The Meat and Poultry Inspection Section has
the responsibility of assuring the Maryland con-
sumer of a wholesome supply of meat and poultry
products, properly labeled and prepared under
sanitary conditions. This is accomplished with a
staff of inspectors, supervisors, and administrative
personnel. Inspection personnel are assigned to
slaughtering and/or processing plants located
throughout the State. Fifty percent of the cost of
State meat and poultry inspection is provided by
the federal government (Code Agriculture Article,
sees. 4-101 through 4-131; 4-201 through 4-230).

The Weights and Measures Section has custody
of, maintains, and safeguards the State's primary
standards as well as secondary standards and
equipment for the enforcement of Maryland's
Weights and Measures Law. It maintains supervi-
sion over weighing and measuring devices,
weights and measures, and packaged commodities
offered for sale, sold, or in use in the State. This
supervision extends to the methodology employed
in obtaining accurate measurement and providing
a means for value comparisons.
The Section also licenses and tests personnel
who determine butterfat content for dairies and
milk cooperatives to use in computing payment to
producers. It also licenses personnel who calibrate
farm milk tanks. It administers and enforces State
laws designed to ensure accuracy, equity, and the
prevention of fraud in the sale and measurement
of commodities and similar transactions involving
quantities (Code Agriculture Article, sees. 11-101
through 11-509).

The Grain Laws Section administers the licens-
ing of grain dealers. All bona fide grain dealers in
the State, as defined by law, are required to regis-
ter and secure an annual license (Code Agricul-
ture Article, sees. 13-201 through 13-215).

The Wholesome Meat Advisory Council was es-
tablished pursuant to the Maryland Wholesome
Meat Act (Chapter 618, Acts of 1968). It was
originally created for a period of three years to
provide broadened representation in policy deter-
minations with regard to meat inspection in the
State, but its existence was extended indefinitely
by Chapter 66, Acts of 1971. The Council advises
the Secretary on adopting rules and regulations
relating to meat inspection and the establishment
of protection standards.
Council members are appointed by the Gover-
nor from representatives of the Department of
Health and Mental Hygiene, the Baltimore City
Health Department, the Maryland Farm Bureau,
the Maryland Agricultural Commission, the Con-
sumer Protection Division of the Office of the At-
torney General, the Maryland Frozen Food Lock-
er Association, Inc., and the slaughtering and
processing industry. The Secretary of Agriculture
designates an ex officio member (Code Agriculture
Article, sec. 4-105).
