ADJUTANTS GENERAL
In response to an Act of Congress, the office of
Adjutant General was created in 1794 (Chapter 53,
Acts of 1793). By the Constitution of 1851, the
Adjutant General was appointed by the Governor
with the advice and consent of the Senate for a term
of six years (Const. 1851, Art. 9, sec. 2). Instead of
limiting the term of office, the 1864 Constitution
provided that the Adjutant General serve at the
pleasure of the Governor (Const. 1864, Art. 9, sec.
3). Since 1867, the Adjutant General has held his
office until the appointment and qualification of his
successor, or until removed in pursuance of the
sentence of a court martial (Const. 1867, Art. 9,
sec. 2).
